Meet Eric Shock!

This week we are pleased to spotlight Mr. Eric Shock! Eric is a Construction Equipment Specialist at our Charleston, WV branch.

Eric is a newcomer to the company but since he started in July of this year he has sold 6 machines! His proudest moment so far was selling two machines to the City of Hurricane, WV. (We hope it’s your first of many proud moments to come Eric!). Before coming to MH Equipment Eric was the Assistant Vice President at Huntington Insurance and an Account Executive for Federated Insurance.

Eric and his beautiful wife Amber have been married for 9 years and have 3 amazing children, Carson, Isaac, and Gracee who are all under the age of 7! As a family they enjoy attending church activities as well as local sporting events. Eric says his favorite team is the West Virgina University Mountaineers.

When Eric isn’t working hard selling machinery or with his family he loves to go bow hunting and has been an active archer for over 15 years. He also enjoys landscaping and beautifying his yard with plants.

If Eric could have dinner with anyone is history he says he would like to share a meal (preferably sushi) with Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was credited with establishing the National Parks System and since he also was an avid hunter they would have tons to talk about!

Eric says he really enjoys the people at MH Equipment and the Values of the company and it’s employees.

Meet Hersh Atkinson!

Hersh Atkinson is this week’s sales highlight. Hersh has been with MH Equipment since 2003 located in our Columbus, Ohio branch. Prior to joining MH Equipment, he worked for Bode-Finn for 6 years before MH Equipment acquired the territory. Hersh is currently a Material Handling Specialist responsible for the sale of new and used material handling equipment. Other previous careers include the management of a propane distribution center where he shared the common thread of being around propane fuel systems and forklifts.

Although there have been many numerous rewarding experiences over his years in equipment sales, Hersh says that the one that stands out the most is his partnership with Safelite/Belron company. After almost ten years of trying, he finally landed their business and helped them to set up fleet programs for two distribution centers that included new Hyster forklifts, high efficiency batteries and charges, wire guidance, racking, and more. Here is a story about his persistence with Safelite in the MHEDA Journal.

When asked what he likes most about working for MH Equipment, Hersh replied: “The opportunity to have access to and provide the needed equipment after determining the correct solution to a customer problem. We have the ability to represent a wide variety of products and services to truly be a solutions provider.”

Hersh has been married to his lovely wife for over 27 years and together they have a small horse farm that takes a fair amount of their time. When he’s not working he likes flying, anything to do with automotives (he actually owns a very rare sports car – only 66 of them exist in the US!), and spending time on or around water – swimming and boating.

Hersh is also a big fan of THE Ohio State University Buckeyes – having grown up in Columbus and attended OSU. He particularly enjoys the football program. His favorite food is Saganaki (pan seared Greek cheese). “It comes to the table and the waiter lights it on fire – gets the people in the restaurant excited every time!”

Quad Cities Hi-Lite

The Quad Cities branch is one of the three original locations of MH Equipment.  Now located in Davenport, Iowa, their beginnings started in downtown Moline, Illinois, however in 1976, a fire destroyed the Moline location and the branch relocated to East Moline where it remained until June of 2008 when they moved to their current location.

Nearly fifty employees make up the team at the Quad Cities branch including; Material Handling Specialist, Chuck Freeland, Aftermarket Representatives, Bill Baker and Mark Meyer, and Rental Manager, Jacob Greenwalt.  The Davenport branch includes a very large territory that spans over 320 miles from the southern most to northern most corners of the territory so these guys have a lot of land to cover when out on their daily sales calls.  To put it in perspective it would take six hours to drive from corner to corner of the territory!

Part of our mission at MH Equipment is to support the communities in which we live.  As part of that culture the Quad Cities branch are annual supporters of the Quad Cities Festival of Trees.  The Festival of Trees is the annual fundraiser for Quad City Arts, a local not-for-profit arts agency. It takes more than 3,500 volunteers,  over 650 designers, nearly 3,500 CenterStage entertainers, and over 150 Sponsors help to make Festival of  Trees possible. Festival has a $2.5 million dollar economic impact on the community and is recognized as one of the top events in North America, raising over $4 million dollars in support of local arts over a 20 year period. Over 100,000 people experience Festival annually, making it one of the largest attractions in the Quad Cities. This fundraiser makes it possible for Quad City Arts to provide quality arts programming year round for residents of six counties in Eastern Iowa and Western IL.

For the last seven years, Davenport has sponsored Upward Basketball for Underprivileged Kids. Upward Sports provides a fun kids sports experience based on healthy competition.  Upward Sports is one the world’s largest Christian sports league for children with leagues in nearly every major city.

The Quad Cities is home to John Deere Corporate Headquarters, the John Deere Classic at the TPC Deere Run, and the John Deere Commons which houses historical information on the company as well as a vintage 1900’s Deere dealership. Visitors to the Quad Cities also frequent the Rock Island Arsenal. During the civil war, the island was used as a prison camp, but today is utilized for production of military equipment such as the Howitzer & Abrams Tank.

Even though Davenport has a large group they are a very close-knit, supportive bunch!  Not only is the Quad Cities a great branch to work at but the area is full of fun and historic activities that can be enjoyed by the entire family!


MH Equipment Omaha Branch Helps Flood Victims

People Matter in Omaha!

On June 1, the Missouri River flood reached the Sioux City area. Some businesses and home owners had to evacuate while others built levees to protect their properties. Two of our resident technicians, Jeremy Smith and Pat Anderson, decided to get involved to help out their community.

Jeremy was at the Tyson-Dakota City facility where they were scrambling to build a levee around their waste water treatment. He asked how he could help and offered to bring lift trucks in to move sand bags. Jeremy called the Omaha branch and arranged for Hyster rentals to be shipped in. He dedicated many hours of his personal time and charity time that week moving sand bags to help his community.

Pat Anderson was at the Tyson headquarters located in Dakota Dunes where they were also trying to build a levee around their facility. Pat coordinated getting a rental truck and helped them with their needs. He devoted many personal hours along with his charity time to help save this community.

On Saturday, June 4th, Jeremy and Pat along with our Material Handling Specialist, Barry Cahoon, devoted their day helping Tyson build a levee around their facility. The response from Tyson has been overwhelming with gratitude for our contribution and the efforts to save their facility and community.

In addition to Jeremy, Pat, and Barry, Service tech John Ebert has also shown his support for the community by devoting his personal time sand bagging.

The Missouri River continues to rise in the Council Bluffs and Omaha areas. With levees breaking around us, MH employees and families have to be prepared to evacuate their homes at any given time. The river in our area has reached an all time record of 36 feet.

The Omaha branch has done an outstanding job showing the community that People Matter.

IT Hightlight – Mark Gillis

We are proud to highlight Mark Gillis, IT Director, who has been with our MH family for the past 6 years! Mark works at our corporate location and is responsible for the management and direction of our IT team. He has over 25 years experience in the IT field including experience in design and engineering of networking systems, programming, creating innovative ways to integrate systems together, experience with IP Phone systems and overall general knowledge of computers and operating systems.

Mark came to MH Equipment from Human Kinetics Publisher, one of the world’s largest publishers of physical education, sports science and sports activity books and are based out of Champaign, IL. where he lead an IT team there for 13 years.

As for how he came to be at MH Equipment, the story is rather interesting:  “I got started at MH Equipment after I met my wife to be (at the time) Angie, and decided we were destined to spend the rest of our lives together. She was rooted here (in Peoria) and she had a daughter (Alison) that was very involved in the school system. Well, since I was stealing her mother away, I did not have the heart to steal her away from her friends also, so I decided a move was in order. After five interviews with members of the executive team, I excitedly joined MH Equipment! During the process, I found that the HR Director’s aunt lived across the street from where I lived in Mahomet, IL and that my wife’s parent’s lived next door to the HR Director! Coincidence….I think not! God always has a plan.”

During his time at MH Equipment, Mark says that in addition to the rewarding accomplishments the IT team has gained over the years – from the Cisco phone system installation across the footprint to designing and implementing the MPLS network – his most rewarding experience was his charitable work creating and leading the effort of coffee mugs (over 400 mugs) and coffee drive (over 140 pounds) for our troops while in Iraq during the war. “It is when I affect people that I am the most proud!”

Mark’s favorite thing about working for MH is the people he works with. “I really enjoy working with the people and staff at MH Equipment. The staff here are really a great group of people to work with. I also think we are lucky to have a leadership group that is not only looking out for the Company’s well being, but my family’s as well. I think some people forget that MH Equipment provides us a great place to provide for our families and for that I am thankful!”

As previously mentioned, Mark is married to his lovely wife, Angie, and has two step-children: Alison who is 18 and attending Western University and Adam, who is a forklift driver. Angie and Mark live in Washington, Illinois and have 2 dogs, a miniature poodle (Jordan) and a toy poodle, Mimi, who actually rules the house because she is the cutest dog ever!

In his spare time, Mark likes to play cards (particularly Texas Hold’em) and is very sports oriented, “I try to play basketball twice a week, work out twice a week, play golf, swim, play water volleyball, take the dogs for a walks or to the dog park and keep my yard up. Angie and I also like to walk, boat, grill out and spend time socializing with friends.” His favorite sports team is the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois. Being from the Champaign, IL area for 40 years creates great loyalty – “I still get shivers going to College Sporting events and seeing the crowd’s reaction and the sense of pride they have in our University.”

When asked what person Mark would like to have dinner with and why, he replied “I would love to have dinner with Martin Luther King Jr. This is a man that believes that each person should stand on his own merits regardless of race, nationality, socio-economic status, etc. Many people do not know that he traveled over 6 million miles and spoke over 2,500 times in an 11 year period. The Black community had embraced him due to him fighting for their injustices. But there was a huge amount of white people who embraced him as well for his beliefs that everyone is created equal. Imagine what the United States would have been like today if he had not been assassinated at the young age of 39.”

And finally, something unique that not everyone knows about Mark: “I think that most people already know that I am tall (6′ 7″), but what they don’t know is that I was fairly short growing up. When I was in the 8th grade, I actually was able to play on the “B” squad (younger kids and short kids) as well as the “A” squad, due to how short I was. I did not start growing tall until end of my freshman year in high School. I actually grew 2 inches in 7 days when I was a Junior.” (Holy Cow!!)

IT Team Highlight – Meet Steve Dahlhauser!

We are proud to highlight Steve Dahlhauser who has been with our MH family for the past 14 years! Steve has had a long career with MH Equipment - in fact, this was his first job out of college! As an an important part of our IT team, Steve’s main responsibilities include managing the network and network equipment as well as internet connections and firewalls. Steve also manages our Cisco phone system and works alongside management to conduct research & development to determine what technologies and products we could implement to benefit the company. This means that Steve will likely be the person to assist you should you need help or have issues with network and internet access or have problems with your phone.

As previously mentioned, working for MH was Steve’s first job out of college. He graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa with a degree in Compter Science. Steve is married to his lovely wife Dannelle, who also works for MH Equipment as the General Marketing Manager. Together, Steve and Dannelle have three children: Chester (12), Meadow (5), and Macey (2). As a family, the Dahlhauser’s enjoy sports -particularly Iowa Hawkeye and Miami Dolphins football, going to the Des Moines Blank Park Zoo, and just hanging out with friends and extended family.

Steve says that the most rewarding aspect of his position, (other than meeting his awesome wife and asking her out on a date) is “when the IT team can implement new technologies that improve the work experience and efficiency of our employees.  I like to think that my most satisfying moment is always somewhere on the horizon as I constantly strive to look for ways to improve myself and the company through knowledge and understanding of technology and how it can be used to positively effect business operations.” Steve likes working for MH, because he enjoys that every day presents a different challenge and because most of the people the IT team works with are kind and friendly and appreciate the help the team provides. He also likes working for a company that is always looking for the next opportunity and not just resting on it’s laurels.

As for hobbies, Steve likes to consider himself a connoisseur of fine beers and has, in fact, tried over 400 different beers from at least 25 different countries! He also likes to golf, although he doesn’t get to play as much as he’d like, and is the commissioner of a fantasy football league that is going on it’s 9th year. Steve says that fantasy football draft day is one of his favorite days next to Christmas and the SuperBowl which his wife thinks is ridiculous!

Employee Highlight – Meet Dave Adams!

Dave Adams is an Aftermarket representative located in our Columbus, Ohio branch. He has been with MH Equipment a little over two years and came to us from the local Komatsu dealer where he sold lift trucks and parts and service. Once he heard there was an Aftermarket position available with MH, he was quick to apply! We’re glad he did, because he brings years of material handling experience!

Since coming to MH, Dave says that his most rewarding experience was signing a 3-year service agreement with a major airline repair facility; closely followed by the time he won a 37” TV for an internal aftermarket sales incentive contest. As for what he likes most about working for MH Equipment, Dave says “great people, working together to solve customer problems is very rewarding and not to mention that the company’s credibility is outstanding.”

On a personal note, Dave resides in Canal Winchester, Ohio with his wife Kristina and their two sons, Clay (16) and Colt (3). Together they like spending quality family time and just recently took a beach vacation that was a lot of fun. Dave likes to work on cars and motorcycles (which he has done for as long as he can remember) and says that he thinks the troubleshooting involved with these repairs helps him with troubleshooting when it comes to aftermarket sales as well. He also likes to spend time boating or fishing and participates in a golf league with his dad.

We won’t hold it against him, but Dave is a New York Jets fan and has been since his mom bought him a Joe Namath poster when he was a little boy. This love of football carried on into his teen years and Dave was a part of the All City football team for 3 years!

Meet Josh Ford

Josh Ford has been an Aftermarket Representative based out of our Bowling Green, Kentucky Branch for the past five years. Before joining MH, Josh worked for a nation-wide medical supply distributor. At the time, his son was only a couple of years old and his current job required extensive travel – “I really wanted to spend more time at home with my family instead of in the air with strangers.” Therefore, Josh began to search for a company that understood the family/work balance and MH Equipment was a perfect fit!  

During his time at MH, Josh has had the priviledge of landing some significant sales, but says that even the small sales are rewarding. “I get the same satisfaction every time any customer awards me with an order”.  In addition to working with customers, Josh also enjoys working at MH Equipment because he enjoys his co-workers and appreciates working for a company that appreciates it’s employees.

To get to know Josh personally, he is married to his wife Cara and together they have two children, Tyler (8) and Allison (3). Together the family really enjoys sports. “We’re fortunate that both our kids enjoy sports as much as we do, so a lot of sports are played at our house.” – and when asked what his favorite sports team is, Josh replied “UK Wildcats – is there anyone else???” (Obviously Josh and Marshall Karem must have great conversations on how the Wildcats are sure to get their eighth banner this year!)

For fun, Josh also likes canoeing, golfing, fishing, playing basketball and baseball, as well as deer and turkey hunting.  I think it’s safe to say that Josh is a good ol’ southern boy with his love of the outdoors and good hearty meals. His favorite meal consists of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, and finished off with blackberry cobbler and one scoop of vanilla ice cream. (YUM!) 

We asked Josh to name one person in history he would like to have dinner with and he said, “The one person I would choose to have dinner with would be Mark Twain – given his writings, humor, and experiences, I think it would be a very entertaining dinner!” (Hopefully Mr. Twain likes blackberry cobbler!)

Why Rent from MH Equipment?

Despite the positive economic trend of 2011, most companies are still slow to invest in material handling equipment. This means that forklift dealers are seeing an increase in both parts and service as older equipment is being used longer AND an increase in rentals since capital purchases are still (for the most part) being avoided.

  • Every now and then, a highly specialized piece of equipment is needed to get a job done. That’s a perfect time for short term MH Equipment rental.
  • A short term MH Equipment rental allows customers to thoroughly evaluate a given model under actual field conditions prior to purchase or a long-term rent/lease commitment.
